Is your family going stir-crazy yet? With the quarantine in place, it can be easy for your brain to assume that you have to stay indoors despite the warm spring weather beckoning outside. But just because you can’t leave town for vacation doesn’t mean that you can’t get out and enjoy the beautiful weather! To help you get outside, we’ve put together 5 great outdoor activities that your family can enjoy even during quarantine.
1. Camp in the Backyard
Did you have a camping trip planned this year? Or maybe you’ve just been promising to take the kids for years, and it never happens. Well, now’s your perfect chance to give your family a taste of the camping experience—right in your backyard! Pick a night this week where the weather will be nice, and stake out a tent in the yard or string up hammocks. If possible, go all-in with a fire pit so you can roast hot dogs and smores to make the experience as authentic as possible. Then spend the evening telling stories under the stars and playing games in the tent by lamplight before snuggling into your sleeping bags. It’s the perfect staycation plan to get you outside and give younger family members a taste of what real camping can be like!
2. Tour a State or National Park by Bike
While most public areas are closed for quarantine, state and national parks are still open for exploration! And they’re usually large enough to make social distancing a breeze. If you’re not familiar with what’s in your area, a quick online search will let you know what parks are close by and which ones have biking trails. You can always hike instead, but biking through a park is a great way to see a lot of area in a short amount of time, plus it removes some limitations for little ones who can’t hike very far. By bike, you’ll be able to reach more beautiful locations hidden deep within the park’s interior and still get a great workout. So pick out a nearby park, choose a trail, and spend the afternoon exploring together!
3. Do a Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt
For a quick and easy adventure, take your family on a neighborhood scavenger hunt. This is a great way to spend an hour or two getting fresh air and keeping your kids occupied without getting too far from home. It’s also an activity that adults can enjoy with the right categories! Choose from nature and animal hunts or maybe even a quarantine-themed one. Just print off a list for each family member (you can find hundreds of free templates online, or you can make your own) and be sure to set ground rules for safety and time limits before you go. May the best hunter win!
4. Create a “Drive-In” Theater in Your Backyard
If you’re sick of watching movies on your TV, why not kick things up a notch? With the simple components of a white sheet (or the side of your house) and a projector, you can create your own “big-screen” theater in the backyard! Projectors aren’t hard to set up, and they don’t have to be expensive either, like this Apeman mini-projector for just $70 on Amazon. For the full experience, pull your vehicle into the backyard and watch your movie from the car like you would at a real drive-in theater. Or, if you happen to have a truck, fill the back with blankets and pillows for extra coziness while you enjoy the show. Make sure there’s plenty of popcorn to go around, and then relax under the stars.
5. Make an Obstacle Course
If you have plenty of time on your hands, now’s your chance to go all out with a family obstacle course! Dig through your attic, garage, basement, and closets for items that can be repurposed into the ultimate obstacle course challenge. Turn old boxes into tunnels and string up Christmas lights that you have to crawl under. Make a giant slip and slide from a tarp and dish soap. Just get creative! Then enjoy the laughs and bonding time as your family competes for the fastest time record.
Social distancing does not mean you have to stay inside! Even during quarantine, it’s essential to get outside for exercise and fresh air—and having fun certainly doesn’t hurt! These easy outdoor activities will be enjoyable for your whole family, and they’re simple enough that you could try one every day this week. Pick one out for tonight and add a little more fun into your staycation.
